Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, creators of Wicked, were inspired by the 1995 Gregory Maguire story "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West".
This show has been hailed for its expansive story of Oz, giving The Wizard of Oz fans around the globe a look into Glinda and Elphaba (later known as the Wicked Witch of the West). Wicked, even with its main characters starting off as enemies, it is a profound journey about acceptance and friendship. With an incredible costume creation and jaw-dropping special effects, WICKED guides its audience direct to the wonderful land of Oz!
The production first premiered in 2003, thus it is now 21 years old. Since its debut, Wicked has gone on to surpass $1 BILLION in box office sales on Broadway. Only The Phantom of the Opera & The Lion King have managed this remarkable achievement. Wicked has also graced theaters outside of Broadway, with achievements in Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and London.
“Defying Gravity”, “For Good”, and “Popular” are some of the many unforgettable show tunes that lead to Wicked winning a Grammy Award.
This undeniable popularity can be attributed to the production's Grammy-winning music. The original Broadway production also recieved 3 Tony Awards and 7 Drama Desk Awards!
Currently, WICKED is touring with actors Lauren Samuels as Elphaba, Austen Danielle Bohmer as Glinda, plus Blake Hammond as The Wizard.
